PRESENTATIONS SYNOPSIS
The two papers are summarised briefly but succinctly, as possible below:
The speakers emphasized the importance of millennium celebration (1000years) as a landmark in the life of Owo. The speakers took cursory excursion into Owo Origin, the past, the challenges, the prospects, the present and made adequate recommendations; all in the bid to strategically reposition Owo and her people.
ORIGIN
The Owo people came from Ife and the First Olowo was Ologho Ojugbelu.
The name. Owo (Ogho) was derived from the peculiarity of Oba Ojugbelu's behaviour, an honourable man. Ogho means honour. The integrity of the founder, Ojugbelu, earned Ogho its name, Ogho (land of Honour)
OUR PAST
Owo and her people were warriors. Almost all the Obas were warriors and engaged in expansionist sphere. Security of the people, lands and properties was ensured through constructions of underground roads and hideouts call Yara.
Ogho has her history of spiritual guidance; the legendary Edun provided spiritual guardance to the Owo people from Ife to the present location.
Settlement of peace was exclusive preserve of the palace. The Oba presided over all matters ranging from land dispute, marriage challenges, family to criminal matters and others. The power of the palace was highly revered .
Educational institutions such as Imade College, Owo High School, St. Louis, etc. prided the ancient town
Owo produced the First Executive Governor of Ondo State, Baba Adekunle Ajasin.
CHALLENGES
Decreased population records due to political manipulations.
Dearth of records
Diverse composition of the Owo people, which is supposed to be the Kingdom's strength tears the people apart. We fight one another at different times leaving sores in the heart and minds of so many because of political, chieftaincy and power sentiments.
Non integration of the children of the elites into the Owo cultural values. Owo language jettisoned
Lack of viable industries
Etc.
PROSPECTS
The speakers noted that there had been tremendous development during the time of contemporary Obas, starting from Sir Olateru Olagbegi till date.
Increased educational institutions, public and private: Ondo State Polytechnic, Owo, now RUGIPO, ACHIEVERS UNIVERSITY.
Owo pride herself in the production of well meaning citizens in places of authority at the National and State levels. The current Executive Governor of Ondo State. Arakunrin Oluwarotimi, Odunayo Akeredolu is a proud Owo man.
Owo has the opportunity of turning her waste to wealth through industrialisation.
MOVING FORWARD
Moving on as a people, the speakers noted that we need to pay attention to infrastructural development, training and employment of our youths, creating more schools, health institutions, etc..
RECOMMENDATIONS
1. Formation of Owo Social Development Forum/ Ogho Gede Forum to represent all the communities, both municipal and suburb.
2. Urgent call for Summit of Owo Indigenes.
3. Setting up credible personalities to propose Roadmap Agenda for Owo
5. Engage in educational, scientific, cultural and intellectual development.
6. Encourage Traditional Family Values through restoration of Omoluwabi into the Owo society.
7. Encouraging of Ogho dialect, heritage, dressing, food, songs, and other identities.
8. Need for Owo Leader; a selfless personality that can lead the town.
9. Development of Owo Website
10. Owo Day Celebration
12. All Traditional Institutions in Owo, headed by the Olowo of Owo must cooperate. This is key to the development of Owo.
