Amazing! Nigerian primary school elects prefects through democratic process

It was indeed an interesting and amazing exercise to be experienced in a primary school setting. In the week preceding the school prefects election, visitors and parents witnessed the democratic wind in the serene environment of the school with the students posters and flyers pasted outside and inside the school compound.

"As a parent, I found it very interesting to have my son returned home and brought a form which must be signed and attest to it with his photograph for him to be elected as band prefect of the school and this form also must be endorsed by at least a teacher in the school" remarked a parent. In fact, not just any student too can contest!  Any interested student must have a minimum 60% point at the last promotion to primary six.

It was noteworthy to remark that the contestants were also asked to prepare for manifesto. The good side of this exposure for the students is to also have sense of belongings in the democratic process of our noble country later in life. The pupils were happy witnessing process of voting using ballot papers and the accreditation process. A son returned and remarked " Daddy,  I voted for myself and after voting, my teacher applied ink on my finger thumb and all of us who voted" What a good experience for the kids!

There exists this standard private primary school in Ondo City whose academic curriculum is just like higher institutions setting. The school is Graceland Nursery and Primary school located at Brigadier Ademulegun road before akiavic blue roof hotel. This school, among others,  practices democratic process to elect prefects, organizes excursions to standard places for educational purposes, allows the pupils to be involved in creative entrepreneurship activities  during holidays just to make them independent later in life in addition to their paper qualifications.

In fact now, what students learn in the primary school is far more than what it used to be in the old days. Now civic education, political education, history, basic technology, basic science, ICT and others beyond the usual conventional subjects.
